Wooden Skirting Board Prices: A Guide to Costs and Factors Affecting Spending

When planning a renovation or a new finish, one of the cost items to consider is the skirting board. But what are the prices of a wooden skirting board and what do they depend on? Understanding the factors that determine the final cost is crucial to making an informed choice that balances budget and quality.

The price of a wooden skirting board is not an absolute value, but the result of a combination of elements: the type of wood, the workmanship, the height and the finish. Let us analyse them in detail.

Factors Determining Price

The cost per running metre of a wooden skirting board can vary considerably. Here are the main factors to consider:

  • Support material: It is the most important factor.
    • Solid wood: It is the most valuable and, consequently, the most expensive option. The price in turn varies according to the wood species: woods such as Spruce or Pine are cheaper, while Oak, Walnut or Teak cost more.
    • Multilayer support: Often used for high-quality lacquered skirting boards, it offers great stability and is intermediate in cost.
    • MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard): It is the cheapest substrate, but also the least resistant, especially to moisture.
  • Height and Thickness: For the same material, a taller and thicker skirting board will require more raw material and will therefore cost more. A 12 cm high skirting board will cost more than a 7 cm high one.
  • Finish: The surface processing also affects the price.
    • Rough: It is the cheapest version, to be painted or treated on site.
    • Veneer: Coated with a thin layer of noble wood.
    • Lacquered: Lacquering, especially if of high quality (with several coats of varnish and res

Indicative Price Bands

To give a general idea, we can divide wooden skirting boards into a few price ranges (cost of material alone, per running metre):

  • Economical range (from 1.50 € to 4.00 €/ml): Includes skirting boards made of coated MDF or untreated solid wood of basic essences such as pine and fir.
  • Medium range (from €4.00 to €10.00/ml): It includes skirting boards made of good quality solid wood (e.g. Beech, Toulipier), veneered and lacquered on MDF or wood.
  • High end (from € 10.00 upwards): It concerns skirting boards made of solid wood in fine woods (e.g. Oak, Walnut), tall models with complex profiles, or with special finishes.

Remember: a slightly higher price today for a quality product, such as a solid wood skirting board, is an investment that pays off over time with incomparably superior durability and aesthetics.
